Cher News Catch-up II: Uproar Over Cher's Adelaide 'Key To The City' Ebay Auction

Cher is "upset" and trying to get to the bottom of why a 'key to the city' of Adelaide she was given in 1990 ended up on eBay and sold for nearly US $95,900.00.

The oversized brass key, an engraved plaque, and the item's original box complete with a handwritten sticky note labelled "Mementos" was placed on the Internet auction house and now officials in the southern Australian city have deemed themselves offended, with Adelaide mayor Stephen Yarwood saying he was "exceptionally disappointed."

The legendary hit-maker was presented the key to the city by former Adelaide mayor Steve Condous, in recognition of her performance at the 1990 Formula One Grand Prix. On the subject, he has said, "I would have thought that getting the key to a city like Adelaide would have had some value to her but obviously it doesn't because she wouldn't have got rid of it."

According to the listing, the key was "picked up directly from her Malibu home!" Proceeds from the sale will reportedly go to Cher's charitable foundation. "Cher receives many awards and gifts from all over the world," the seller explained. "At certain times she goes through her huge collection and decides to share many of these special treasures with her fans … I think the city of Adelaide should be proud of what this plaque and key are doing for those in need or suffering. Cher is incredible, kind and generous and in no way meant to slight the people of Adelaide."

Cher has however, expressed that she was mystified about it appearing on eBay. She said, "I'm upset too and trying to get to the bottom of it! I Think my office f---ed up?" The auction closed after 146 bids from people around the world, with the successful buyer paying around US $95,900.00 (around £55,000).
